What I will learn?

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of common paediatric emergencies, including respiratory distress, choking, anaphylaxis, and seizures.
  • Assess the severity of injuries or illnesses and make informed decisions about appropriate first aid actions.
  • Demonstrate effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques for infants and children, following updated guidelines.
  • Perform rescue breathing and chest compressions on paediatric patients.
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) appropriately in paediatric emergencies.
  • Recognise and respond to choking incidents in infants and children.
  • Apply the correct procedures to clear airway obstructions, including back blows and abdominal thrusts.
  • Treat wounds, burns, fractures, sprains, and other injuries commonly affecting children.
  • Manage head injuries, eye injuries, and nosebleeds effectively and safely.
  • Provide immediate care for poisoning, including ingestion of hazardous substances.
  • Recognise the signs of common medical conditions in children, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and allergic reactions.
  • Administer appropriate first aid for medical conditions like anaphylaxis and asthma attacks, including the use of epinephrine auto-injectors.
  • Implement safety measures to prevent accidents in homes, schools, and childcare settings.
  • Conduct risk assessments in environments where children are present, identifying potential hazards and mitigating risks.
  • Educate others on child safety and accident prevention.
  • Identify the signs of shock in children and infants and take appropriate actions to stabilise them.
  • Develop emergency action plans for paediatric incidents, ensuring proper communication with medical professionals and emergency services.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios through hands-on practice and simulations.
  • Show competence in administering first aid through practical assessments in controlled environments.
  • Communicate calmly and clearly with children in distress, as well as with their parents or caregivers, during emergency situations.
  • Liaise with emergency services, providing accurate and timely information about the child's condition.
  • Understand the importance of regular refresher courses to maintain first aid certification.
  • Commit to continuous learning and staying updated with changes in paediatric first aid procedures and guidelines.
